Build in order: the 7-step affiliate marketing build order for beginners
Some links on this blog are affiliate links. If you buy through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend things I use or genuinely believe can help. Affiliate Disclosure

This post contains affiliate links. I am a paying VIP member of The ClickBank Profit Club, and if you join or upgrade through my links, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Read my full disclosure.

If you're reading this, I'm guessing one of two things is true.

Either you're brand new and wondering how to start affiliate marketing without wasting months on the wrong things. Or you've already tried, maybe more than once, and you're tired of starting over.

I've been in both places.

I've been doing affiliate marketing for more than five years. I've made sales through ClickBank, CJ Affiliate, and Amazon, using blog content, landing pages, and paid ads. I've also wasted money on ads, and switched products, niches, and courses more times than I can count. I still have a day job, so most of this work happens in the evenings and on weekends.

This page is the guide I wish someone had handed me at the very beginning. It's not a shortcut. It's a build order: what to do first, what to do next, and what to ignore for now.

If you want structure, start here.

What Affiliate Marketing Really Is (in One Minute)

Affiliate marketing is simple to describe. You recommend someone else's product, and when a person buys through your unique link, you earn a commission.

You don't create the product. You don't handle payments, refunds, or customer support. Your job is to connect the right people with something that genuinely helps them.

That's the whole idea. The hard part isn't understanding it. The hard part is building the system around it: finding people, earning their trust, and staying in touch until they're ready to buy.

If you'd like a deeper explanation of how a marketplace like ClickBank works, including hoplinks and gravity, read ClickBank for Beginners after this.

Three Honest Truths Before You Start

I'd rather tell you these now than have you find out the hard way, like I did.

  1. It's a business, not a side trick. The people who treat it like a real business, with a plan and a schedule, are the ones who last.
  2. It takes time. Some people make a first sale in weeks. Many take months. Anyone who promises you fast, guaranteed income is selling something else.
  3. You need a system, not a hack. Traffic tricks come and go. What lasts is a simple system that captures leads and follows up with them.

None of this is meant to scare you off. It's meant to stop you from quitting in week three because the results didn't show up on schedule.

How to Start Affiliate Marketing: 7 Steps I Wish I Knew Earlier

Here's the order I recommend. Each step depends on the one before it, so resist the urge to skip ahead.

Step 1: Decide Who You Want to Help

Before you think about products, think about people.

"People who want to make money online" is too broad. "Beginners who want to build an affiliate income part-time without quitting their job" is much clearer. When you know exactly who you're talking to, choosing offers, writing emails, and creating content all get easier.

Pick a topic you can stay interested in for months. You'll be writing about it a lot.

Step 2: Pick One Affiliate Program and One Offer

This is where most people get greedy. They join ten programs and promote twenty products. I've done it, and it never worked.

Start with one. For digital products, ClickBank is a common starting point because it's free to join and handles payments for you. Amazon Associates suits physical products. Many software companies also run their own affiliate programs.

Before you commit to an offer, read the sales page all the way through and ask yourself one question: would I feel comfortable recommending this to a friend? If the answer is no, keep looking.

Step 3: Set Up a Simple Home Base

You need somewhere to send people that you control. For most beginners, that's a simple landing page.

A blog like this one is great for long-term search traffic, but it isn't required on day one. A single page with a clear headline, a few bullet points, and a sign-up form is enough to start. I use tools like Systeme.io for pages, but there are plenty of options.

Step 4: Start Building Your Email List

If I could only give you one piece of advice, it would be this one.

For years, I sent paid traffic straight to sales pages. When the ads stopped, everything stopped, and I had nothing left to show for the money I'd spent. An email list changes that. Every subscriber is someone you can help again next week, next month, and next year.

You'll need an autoresponder, which is just a tool that collects email addresses and sends your emails automatically. I've used both AWeber and Systeme.io. For this blog's list I use Systeme.io, because it also handles landing pages and automations in one place. At the time of writing, its free plan covers up to 2,000 contacts with unlimited emails, which is plenty to start. If you'd rather start with AWeber, that's a solid choice too.

You also need a small, useful freebie to offer in exchange for an email address, like a checklist or a short guide.

I've written a full walkthrough here: How to Build an Email List for Affiliate Marketing.

Step 5: Write a Short Welcome Sequence

Most people don't buy the first time they see an offer. They need to know you first.

A welcome sequence is a handful of automated emails that every new subscriber receives. Introduce yourself, share a mistake you made, teach one useful thing, and only then recommend something. Five emails is plenty to begin with.

This is the step that lets affiliate marketing keep working while you're at your day job or asleep.

Step 6: Choose One Traffic Source and Learn It Properly

Only now should you worry about traffic. If the earlier steps aren't in place, more visitors just means more people leaving without a trace.

Your main options are:

  • Content and SEO: slow to start, but it compounds over time.
  • Social media: free, but it needs consistency.
  • Paid traffic such as ads or solo ads: fast, but it costs money and punishes mistakes.

Pick one. Get reasonably good at it. Then add another. If you choose paid traffic, start small and track every dollar.

Step 7: Track, Fix the Weakest Step, and Repeat

Watch three numbers: how many visitors sign up, how many subscribers open your emails, and how many click through to the offer.

Whichever number is weakest, fix that first. It's almost always cheaper to improve one weak step than to buy more traffic.

Can You Start Affiliate Marketing With No Money?

Yes, but let's be honest about what that means.

Joining most affiliate programs is free. Many autoresponders and page builders have free plans or low-cost starter plans. You can write content and post on social media without spending anything.

What you can't avoid is spending time. When you have no budget, your time becomes the investment. That's fine. Just know that free traffic usually takes longer to build, so patience matters more.

The one thing I'd avoid with no money is paid traffic. It's the fastest way to learn expensive lessons.

How Long Until Your First Commission?

I won't give you a number, because I don't know your situation and nobody else does either.

It depends on your niche, your offer, your traffic source, and how many hours a week you can give it. What I can tell you is what I've seen: the people who get results are usually the ones who finish one complete system and stick with it long enough to learn from it.

The Mistakes That Cost Me Years

Most of my wasted time came from the same few habits: building everything at once, chasing new tactics, switching offers too early, and trying to figure it all out alone.

I wrote about all of them, and how to fix each one, in 8 ClickBank Mistakes That Keep Beginners Stuck. If you only read one more article after this, make it that one.

If you're new here, this is the order I'd read things in:

  1. This page for the big picture and the build order.
  2. ClickBank for Beginners to understand how the marketplace works.
  3. Email List for Affiliate Marketing to build the asset that matters most.
  4. 8 ClickBank Mistakes so you can avoid the traps I fell into.
  5. Level the Playing Field if you'd rather not build every piece yourself.

If You'd Rather Not Build Everything Alone

Everything above can be done on your own. Plenty of people do it that way.

But I'll be honest. After years of piecing things together from YouTube videos and half-finished courses, what I was really missing was structure and guidance. That's why I joined The ClickBank Profit Club, run by John Thornhill, and later upgraded to VIP.

It gives members a done-for-you funnel, follow-up emails already in place, and training with live support. The leads you generate go to your own list, not the vendor's. It's free to join, there's an optional paid upgrade, and it won't do the work for you.

I've shared the full picture, including pricing, commissions, and what I don't like, in my ClickBank Profit Club review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is affiliate marketing still worth it?

I think so, as long as you treat it like a real business. The basics haven't changed: help the right people, earn their trust, and recommend things that genuinely help. What changes is the tactics, which is why building an asset like an email list matters so much.

Do I need a website to start affiliate marketing?

No. A simple landing page and an email list are enough to begin. A blog helps with long-term traffic from Google, but you can add one later.

Which affiliate program is best for beginners?

There's no single best one. ClickBank is popular for digital products because it's free to join and pays affiliates directly. Amazon Associates works well for physical products. Choose the one that fits the people you want to help.

Can I do affiliate marketing with a full-time job?

Yes. That's exactly how I do it. The key is a fixed schedule, even if it's just an hour a few evenings a week, and focusing on one step at a time.

How much can a beginner earn from affiliate marketing?

There's no honest way to put a number on it. Earnings depend on your offer, audience, traffic, and consistency. Focus on building the system first. Results follow the work.

Final Thoughts

Learning how to start affiliate marketing isn't the hard part. Sticking with one plan long enough to see it work is.

So don't try to do everything this week. Decide who you want to help. Pick one offer. Set up one page and one email sequence. Then take the next step.

That's how I'd start if I were starting again today.
